Snowboarding

Watch your slangage – Don’t sound like a dope on the slopes. Here’s a guide to snowboarding lingo:

Bonking - Intentionally tapping your board off a non-snow object. See “Jib.”

Crater - To crash or fall. “He cratered into a snowbank.” (Also, “pack.”)

Fakie - Riding the snowboard backward from a normal stance.

Flail - To ride badly and out of control.

Hucker - A snowboarder who hits big airs, especially off cliffs.

Jib - To ride non-snow objects, like rails and trees. “I’m going to jib off the tree and bonk that rock on the landing.”

Poach - If an area is closed or roped off, and you ride it anyway, you’re poaching it.

Punch - To catch the toe of the board in the snow and crash. “He punched the jump.”

Rolling Down the Windows – The action of being off balance and spinning your arms wildly in an attempt to recover.

Sketching - Riding unsteadily, near falling.

Slap - To incorrectly hit an air or landing? “He slapped it.”

Snake - Someone who cuts the lift line, or drops in front of you in the halfpipe.

South Shore Birthday - A beating. “Don’t make me give you a south shore birthday.”

Stomp - A solid landing. “He really stomped that McTwist.”

Tomahawk - A particularly hard fall, usually involving a headplant.
